The LBA unofficially died yesterday morning, September 2, 2008, at 7:24 A.M. central standard time. That's when former commish and Los Angeles Lakers GM jamesdeane made this announcement:
"This is how we always done things, a poll. The league is in a worse position now then it has ever been, and if we were to switch simmers, imo {in my opinion} it would be over. I obviously know this will make a few GMs unhappy, and if they decide to leave that is their choice."
The poll was to determine if the league simmer of the past two years should remain in that position. The other option was uncertainty. Some would argue both options were marked with uncertainty.
The league voted, 16-13, that Cavs should continue his role as simmer. And it was the first time every member of the league voted in a poll. What a way to go out.
Shortly after the results of the poll became official jamesdeane made a second statement:
"I am thinking the best thing to do right now is end the league completely to be honest. It has lost all of its greatness that we all liked."
And he was right on most accounts. 'Some' GMs decided to step down and the league had lost the greatness it once possessed.
The exodus started at 8:35 A.M. that morning, only an hour and eleven minutes after the Cavs passed the vote, when the Hawks GM declared that he was out: “i'm quitting for good this time. i came back because i thought changes were going to be made, but this is the way things worked out and i'm not going to waste any more of my time playing on a slanted playing field.”
Next was seergobin, long time LBA member and current GM of the Nets. Apparently, seergobin left because of the “drama”, choosing not to announce his stance on the issue: “I join sim leagues to give me something relaxing and fun to check between school and work, but checking this league everyday to see what the latest drama is and how it will play out is not something I'm interested in.”
Jamesdeane was the next GM to step down (4:01 PM): “You guys work this out, because I am out.” And the punches kept rolling.
76ers at 7:33 P.M: “I'm done with this league. Have fun on the Titanic.”—The Titanic looks empty…
Next was Pistons at 8:06 P.M: “Seems like this league has died anyways.”—And it was only his 21 post. We hardly knew you man, but way to go.
Magic at 11:16 P.M.: “Great league since I joined in about '98, great GM's.”—Nicely put.
Then Mike’s Bulls quit at 11:23 P.M., singing “Y..M..C, A, I like to stay at the...Y..M..C,A.”
Then there was a break until Raptors called it quits at 4:49 A.M. this morning, September 3, 2008: “I must depart.”
Timberwolves followed suite (11:52 A.M.): “I cant believe im done with LBA.”—Me either.
Then the last champion of the LBA hung up his boots at 1:11 P.M.: “Idon't like any of the NBA players that came out past 2000. This league isn't retro. I've been losing interest the past few months anyways. There were some cool people in this league.”
And finally Blazers announced he was done blazin’ at 2:15: “I’m out.”
Grizzles didn’t make an official announcement, but all indications point to him quitting. Same with the Hornets, his last post at 11:21 Wednesday: “I wish you - the GMs - the best of luck getting this running again. That's probably all I can do.”
Maybe the league will continue, but that’s a big “maybe” and looks unlikely now as no progress has been made anywhere. There are 13 GM spots to fill, and that will soon increase. The Cavs has gone silent and he has the file. There is no leadership whatsoever. No direction. Nothing except a bunch of the old GMs longing for the good old days, still checking the boards every ten minutes like it’s their crack. It was. And it was fun.
Even if Cavs comes back and gets the league running again, it won’t be the LBA. The LBA left the building one by one over the last two days. Sure there are still a couple of old timers on board. But for how long and is there enough of them to make the league what it once was? No.
If the league continues, they might be able to call it the LBA, but it won’t be the LBA.
Bucks GM was dead accurate as usual last night: “this league may as well start playing TAPS”.
Well, play it for us, buddy.
