as you said, the president doesn't really make the calls, he announces those. (heck, the Bush man lived 8 years on that complete indecisiveness, most visible in the completely clueless minutes after 9/11)
But when the final calls have to be made, you need to show some assertiveness and quickly do what needs to be done. And man, I trust Obama far more to make the right decisions for the next 8 years than the grandpa.
He might be a wartime hero, but that's not exactly what the job profile "US prez" asks for.
In fact, there's hope that useless wartime can be over soon and the world can return to the peaceful pre-Bush times, now that the people constantly proclaiming how necessary killing every terrorist world-wide is (sounds ridiculous, I know, and it IS ridiculous ...)
And what Obama gave US (as in the rest of the world) is HOPE. More than any (future) president in my lifetime before him. That alone will guarantee he will get supported from nearly everywhere ...

Obama has given people exactly what Hornets said the end of 8yrs of a government that drove our country into a serious bunch of issues and bringing them a fresh administration what else can there be to have help.
Hope is something that will bring the american people together and get rid of the divide we've had over the past 8 yrs.

Hope is something that will bring the american people together and get rid of the divide we've had over the past 8 yrs. and let me add one thing: Sure McCain announced he would NOT follow Bush's footsteps (or was forced to do it after the economy collapsed and the war looks worse each day) but do you honestly believe in (that badly necessary) change when the same people run the country and only the head is replaced ?
